Trump’s Nuclear Threats Against Iran Narrowly Averted – UN Drama, Ceasefire, and What Comes Next
April 8, 2025 – It’s an early Wednesday afternoon here in Chiang Mai, and I’m relieved to still be writing this post. For a moment yesterday, it genuinely felt like the world was on the brink of catastrophe.
The Dangerous Escalation
Donald Trump’s nuclear threats toward Iran — including talk of wiping out Persian civilization — pushed the situation to the edge. Nuclear weapons were openly discussed as a real possibility. As I told my good friend Regis Trembley last night, we’ve been concerned about nuclear war for a long time, but this felt different. The rhetoric was that extreme.
Thankfully, as of this morning, the immediate threat has been pulled back. A two-week ceasefire has been agreed upon, based largely on Iran’s conditions rather than Trump’s maximalist demands.
UN Security Council Showdown
One of the most significant developments was the emergency UN Security Council meeting called by Bahrain. The resolution attempted to condemn Iran for striking back after Bahrain allowed the U.S. to use its bases to bomb Iran. Russia and China, for the first time in this crisis, firmly stood up and vetoed the resolution.
The vote was 11-4 in favor, but the vetoes from permanent members Russia and China killed it. This was a rare and important moment of pushback against Western escalation. They criticized Trump’s nuclear threats against Iran.
Domestic Backlash in America
Inside the United States, there has been significant outrage. Congressman Ro Khanna and other representatives — including an Iranian-American lawmaker who opposes the Iranian regime — delivered strong speeches condemning Trump’s reckless behavior. Some are now openly discussing impeachment or invoking the 25th Amendment.
While Vice President JD Vance is hardly an improvement, the growing disarray in Washington is at least buying us critical time.
What This Means Moving Forward
This is not peace — it is a temporary reprieve. A two-week ceasefire gives the world a chance to breathe, but the underlying problems and the aggressive agenda of U.S. hegemony remain firmly in place.
As I discussed with Regis, we cannot allow despair to demobilize us. Even when things look bleak, we must exercise our own agency.
Call to Action: What You Can Do Right Now
Here’s what I urge every reader and listener to do:
- Contact your two U.S. Senators and your Representative — demand accountability and an end to this reckless foreign policy.
- Support calls both for impeachment as well as Trump’s removal from office, as the 25th Amendment requires of Trump’s irresponsible, erratic and mentally unbalanced behavior.
- Organize or join mass demonstrations. History shows that large, visible public pressure works. I was in Washington D.C. in 1970 protesting Nixon’s bombing of Cambodia — a million people showed up and it made a difference.
As Frederick Douglass famously said: “Power concedes nothing without a demand.”

Trump’s Nuclear Threats–Final Thoughts
The people currently running U.S. foreign policy have a long track record of pursuing world hegemony — from the genocide of Native Americans to Cold War plans against Russia, and now this latest confrontation with Iran. Yesterday’s events show they can be slowed down, but they will not change course voluntarily.
We must stay vigilant regarding Trump’s nuclear threats, stay organized, and keep demanding a genuinely peaceful and multipolar world.
