Comparing Treatment of Iraq with Treatment of Israel

Einstein Letter to the NY Times

Comparing the treatment of Iraq with Israel, and how it is treated, reveals a number of interesting, if not disturbing, paradoxes and contexts that are governing our current situation.

Recent Attacks by Israel: Violations of Both Humanitarian and International Law

Many of you may have heard about several serious attacks that Israel has engaged in recently.

One was an attack on people who are serving food to starving people. It’s called the World Central Kitchen.

Another example is the al-Shifa Hospital. Now, al-Shifa Hospital is one of the largest, if not the largest hospitals in the Gaza Strip. And it was attacked not just once, but twice. And in the most recent attack, we hear that after they left, and people went in to assess the damage, they discovered something like 400 bodies with their hands tied behind their backs, shot.

Basically, these people were all massacred. So that’s the second, you know, atrocity that’s taken place just in the last few days.

And then we have the attack, –quite obvious attack– by the Israeli Air Force against the Iranian consular building in Damascus, which is a triple war crime because

  • On the one hand it killed several high officials of Iran.
  • On the other hand, they did it in Syria, which is a violation of Syria’s territorial integrity.
  • And they did it on an Iranian building, which is protected by international law as a diplomatic residence.

This is very interesting because what has happened in this situation is that these matters have been brought to the UN, particularly the case of the diplomatic residence in Damascus, and they just can’t seem to get any kind of resolution against Israel based on this actual proven atrocity.

Comparing Treatment of Iraq with Israel

Let’s compare that to the treatment that Iraq got back 20, 30 years ago in, I think it was 1991.

I’m not exactly sure what year it was. I think it was 1991. What happened was Kuwait was slant drilling, that is drilling underneath the border of Iraq and stealing basically Iraq’s oil and selling it on the open market. And Iraq said to Kuwait, you know, just cut that out because, you know, you’re stealing our oil. And Kuwait basically thumbed their nose at them.

And so Iraq and the leader Saddam Hussein said to the United States, ‘Kuwait is stealing our oil and we got to do something about this.’ The United States said, well, what goes on between you and Kuwait, that’s none of our business.

Iraq under Saddam Hussein went into Kuwait and it created a huge national scandal.

So, and at one point there was a question, what should it be done about this? And the American people were wavering. They were uncertain. They didn’t really want to get involved in this whole situation.

And at a certain point, a young woman shows up in Congress and testifies that they took the babies out of the incubators and left them to die on the cold floor. The American public is outraged and the United States goes in, attacks Iraq inside of Kuwait, drives them out, even though Iraq had said, you know, hold your horses, we’ll leave, but it wasn’t good enough.

And so something like, 200,000 Iraqi soldiers were killed being chased out of Kuwait.

Iraq Illegally Invaded in Wars Based on Lies

The problem is that that never happened. There never were any incubator babies taken out of the incubators and left to die on the cold floor. The whole invasion against Iraq was based on a complete fabricated lie.

Flash forward to 2002. George W. Bush had decided that the US needed to go in and take out Saddam Hussein. And this whole story was cooked up about Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction. And this lady named Judith Miller was talking about the aluminum tubes and the Niger yellow cake and all these kinds of cooked up stories, all of which were completely false.

And in fact, there was one woman named Valerie Plame who was a CIA asset who exposed that and when she exposed that, she was exposed putting her in danger as a CIA asset. So it’s like the truth tellers are the ones who get punished for telling the truth and the war went forward.

Iraq was completely destroyed, a million people died and oh by the way between between the first gulf war and the second gulf war massive sanctions happened against Iraq in which 500,000 babies, children died of malnutrition, lack of medicines, dirty water, causing them to have dysentery and die of dehydration and so on and so forth.

And when Madeleine Albright, who was the Secretary of State was asked, you know, is it really worth it? She says, well, it’s a tough decision, but we, We, the Americans, decide that it’s worth it to kill 500,000 Iraqi children based on a pure unadulterated lie.

Flash Forward to Today

Flash forward to today where the al-Shifa hospital is actually attacked. Hundreds of people are killed. The hospital is virtually leveled to the ground and made completely unusable.

And what is the UN response to that? Nothing. Nothing.

People wring their hands. And instead of sanctions or simply saying we need to go in there and occupy the country the way the United States did to Iraq, there’s no discussion of that at all.

So Let’s Talk about Genocide

What is going on has been decided, declared to be genocide. Genocide was first developed as a concept following the World War II with the Holocaust in Europe, where millions of people were killed. And it wasn’t just Jews, it was gypsies, it was people of many nationalities.

Six million Poles were killed, 27 million Soviet Union people were killed.

So here we have Gaza, which is the latest iteration of it, and nobody’s willing to do anything about it. Let’s talk about the context of this because Israel says, oh, Hamas attacked us on October 7th and we had no choice but to go in and take out Hamas. Oh, and by the way, destroy hospitals, which is illegal under international law, block humanitarian aid and cause mass starvation, which is against humanity and international humanitarian law.

This is completely flagrant violation, all based on a one day event on October 7th.

Context and Background Is EVERYTHING

But what is the context?

What is the background?

Why would a indigenous organization called Hamas carry out this attack? Was there any history to that? Well, I’d like to read something. This is from December 1948. This is a letter that was composed by Albert Einstein, maybe the most preeminent intellectual of the 20th century, and a number of other Jewish intellectuals.

So these are not just anybody, any odd person. These are major leaders of the Jewish community. I’m going to read this to you so that you can get an idea. This is 1948, which is, what, 75 years before October 7th? Here it is:

Einstein’s Letter to the New York Times, December 4, 1948

New Palestine Party
Visit of Menachem Begin and Aims of Political Movement Discussed

Among the most disturbing political phenomena of our times is the emergence in the newly created state of Israel of the “Freedom Party” (Tnuat Haherut), a political party closely akin in its organization, methods, political philosophy and social appeal to the Nazi and Fascist parties. It was formed out of the membership and following of the former Irgun Zvai Leumi, a terrorist, right-wing, chauvinist organization in Palestine.

[That is, before Israel was created, the land was called Palestine. Regardless of what the Israelis say, they say, oh, there is no land, there’s no people, there’s no such thing as Palestine. They themselves admit this was Palestine. Editorial Comment]

The current visit of Menachem Begin, leader of this party, to the United States is obviously calculated to give the impression of American support for his party in the coming Israeli elections, and to cement political ties with conservative Zionist elements in the United States. Several Americans of national repute have lent their names to welcome his visit.

It is inconceivable that those who oppose fascism throughout the world, if correctly informed as to Mr. Begin’s political record and perspectives, could add their names and support to the movement he represents. [See Note A]

Before irreparable damage is done by way of financial contributions, public manifestations in Begin’s behalf, and the creation in Palestine of the impression that a large segment of America supports Fascist elements in Israel, the American public must be informed as to the record and objectives of Mr. Begin and his movement. [See Note B]

The public avowals of Begin’s party are no guide whatever to its actual character. Today they speak of freedom, democracy and anti-imperialism, whereas until recently they openly preached the doctrine of the Fascist state. It is in its actions that the terrorist party betrays its real character; from its past actions we can judge what it may be expected to do in the future. [See Note C]

Attack on Arab Village

A shocking example was their behavior in the Arab village of Deir Yassin. This village, off the main roads and surrounded by Jewish lands, had taken no part in the war, and had even fought off Arab bands who wanted to use the village as their base.

On April 9 (THE NEW YORK TIMES), terrorist bands attacked this peaceful village, which was not a military objective in the fighting, killed most of its inhabitants “240 men, women, and children” and kept a few of them alive to parade as captives through the streets of Jerusalem.

Most of the Jewish community was horrified at the deed, and the Jewish Agency sent a telegram of apology to King Abdullah of Trans-Jordan. But the terrorists, far from being ashamed of their act, were proud of this massacre, publicized it widely, and invited all the foreign correspondents present in the country to view the heaped corpses and the general havoc at Deir Yassin.

The Deir Yassin incident exemplifies the character and actions of the Freedom Party.

Within the Jewish community they have preached an admixture of ultranationalism, religious mysticism, and racial superiority. Like other Fascist parties they have been used to break strikes, and have themselves pressed for the destruction of free trade unions. In their stead they have proposed corporate unions on the Italian Fascist model.

During the last years of sporadic anti-British violence, the IZL and Stern groups inaugurated a reign of terror in the Palestine Jewish community. Teachers were beaten up for speaking against them, adults were shot for not letting their children join them. By gangster methods, beatings, window-smashing, and wide-spread robberies, the terrorists intimidated the population and exacted a heavy tribute.

The people of the Freedom Party have had no part in the constructive achievements in Palestine. They have reclaimed no land, built no settlements, and only detracted from the Jewish defense activity. Their much-publicized immigration endeavors were minute, and devoted mainly to bringing in Fascist compatriots.

Discrepancies Seen

The discrepancies between the bold claims now being made by Begin and his party, and their record of past performance in Palestine bear the imprint of no ordinary political party. This is the unmistakable stamp of a Fascist party for whom terrorism (against Jews, Arabs, and British alike), and misrepresentation are means, and a “Leader State” is the goal.

In the light of the foregoing considerations, it is imperative that the truth about Mr. Begin and his movement be made known in this country. It is all the more tragic that the top leadership of American Zionism has refused to campaign against Begin’s efforts, or even to expose to its own constituents the dangers to Israel from support to Begin.

The undersigned therefore take this means of publicly presenting a few salient facts concerning Begin and his party; and of urging all concerned not to support this latest manifestation of fascism.

New York, Dec. 2, 1948

My Comments on this Letter

This letter was signed by roughly 20 major Jewish intellectuals, including Hannah Arendt, who was one of the chief historians of the Holocaust. She wrote The Origins of Totalitarianism, Banality of Evil, Eichman in Jerusalem, and other books.

And Albert Einstein, of course, who was approached by one of these fascist armed groups for a donation and he wrote a letter to it, saying, you know, forget it. I’m not gonna, because you people are violent, I’m not gonna touch you guys with a 10 foot pole.

There were other Jewish people who were completely against this formation of the Israeli state. That was 1948. Then, let’s look at in 1967, there was a supposed threat to Israel.

The Six Day War Based on a Lie

[Later admitted as a false pretext]. And in the so-called Six-Day War, Israel ended up taking over more land that had been assigned to Palestine, even though Palestine had never been granted statehood by the United Nations.

The UN Failed the Palestinian People for years, notably in 1948. So it was this completely one-sided decision by the United Nations to grant Israel statehood, but they didn’t grant Palestine statehood. Well, why was that?

That was because they granted the Jewish population, which was a distinct minority in the totality of the land, a majority of the land. And the Palestinians said, you know, what kind of a deal is that?

A Bad Deal from the Beginning

Doesn’t matter. It gets done. It’s a done deal. Palestine people get screwed. They’re stuck in smaller areas. And then in 1967, Israel invades those areas and takes over and occupies them. And they decide that according to Jewish history in the Bible, those lands are all part of the Jewish state and the so-called Palestinian people have no place there.

The Sabra and Shatilla Massacre

We go forward to 1982. And Israel invades Lebanon. [Christian Falangists backed by Israel] staged an attack called the Massacre of the Sabra and Shatila Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon. And again, a thousand people are killed by these fascist groups. Nobody does anything about it.

Well, Ariel Sharon, the Israeli soldier was called out for this terrible massacre, but then he ends up becoming prime minister. Then we have Benjamin Netanyahu becomes prime minister.

The September 11th, 2001 Attacks and Their Aftermath

Interestingly enough, the day following September 11th, the attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, there was an article in the New York Times.

And this article first asked Yasser Arafat, who was the head of the Palestinian Fatah movement, the political wing that was responsible for the Palestine areas, what his opinion was of this? He said he was shocked. He said, this is a terrible thing.

Then they asked– this is in the same article– they asked Benjamin Netanyahu, what do you think? Benjamin Netanyahu says, it’s very good!…Well, not good, but it will create sympathy for Israel.

And what follows is the attack on a number of different Arab countries, all in the wake of this terrorist attack on the United States. We flash forward, that’s from 2001.

There were numerous attacks on Gaza and numerous attacks in the West Bank, and there were uprisings by Palestinians because they were being oppressed by the Israelis.

The Israelis, of course, they outgunned them massively, massively. They’ve got, you know, F-16s, they’ve got jets, they’ve got all kinds of weapons against the Palestinians who were very, very poorly armed. They can do isolated terrorist attacks, but basically there was like 20 times more Palestinians killed than Israelis.

One particular Israeli named Miko Peled, who’s the son of an Israeli general, realized what was going on. And he basically decided at a certain point he could take no part in it. He’s been a very vocal opponent of the State of Israel up to this point.

He’s been speaking out a lot about it. You probably ought to look him up on YouTube and you can hear what he has to say. Max Blumenthal, who is a fearless Jewish journalist accompanies him.

Max Blumenthal & Miko Peled : Where is the War in Gaza Going?

Why Most Arab States Don’t Support Palestine

That brings us to October 7th. Israel is basically working to create a situation where the Arab states– no, we’re not talking about the Arab people–We’re talking about the elites of the Arab countries, Saudi Arabia, which is a monarchy, Jordan, which is a monarchy. Other countries like Egypt, which is aligned with the United States, the Gulf Monarchies, Jordan and so on.

The governments of these countries are not aligned with the interests of the people.

And they’re basically in line with Western interests and the West is backing Israel.

Parenthetically, people ask, you know, what is the United States, what’s the rationale for us even being an ally of Israel? Well, Joe Biden had said years earlier, if a state of Israel had not been created, we would have had to create one.

The point being that in the goal for imperial domination of the Middle East, Joe Biden and United Kingdom and the rest of Europe wanted to maintain a European footprint in the Middle East to keep it under control and also to keep control of the oil. So this is a major subtext to what has been going on in all this situation.

Hamas Attacks on October 7th, 2023

Hamas attacks. About 1,200 people were killed. Many of them were soldiers. There were also many, many civilians. However, what we are not told and what Haaretz, which is a major Israeli newspaper reports and which the Gray Zone, which is a great website has reported, is that the Israeli soldiers were in helicopter gunships and just shooting from their helicopters cars that were trying to escape from this attack by Hamas, as well as hostages who were in houses.

The Israeli tank commanders asked, what do we do? How do we deal with these hostages who are in these houses that are controlled by Hamas? And the Israeli authorities say, shoot the house. So there are cases where Israeli civilians were targeted by the Israeli government because they didn’t want Hamas to have negotiating power with these people as hostages.

This Is What We Have Come to.

Now, here we are, a few days have occurred since this terrible attack in al-Shifa hospital.

Remember, the incubator babies in a hospital, it never happened.

Here we are in 2024, we have Israel attacking a hospital, killing hundreds of people, and there’s no consequence. Mass attacks on humanitarian workers, mass induced starvation.

What the hell is going on in this world where the guilty are getting away scot-free and the innocent suffer?
